Student Engagement Affected By Classroom Furniture

Educators are looking for ways everyday to make sure their students are engaged during their lessons. Many think that they have to buy school furniture that are better suited for the students but there are many factors that affect the engagement of students inside the classroom based on the Planning for Higher Education journal. These factors include active involvement, collaboration, in-class feedback, stimulation, focus, opportunity to engage, physical movement, repeated exposure to learning materials via different mediums, real-life situations, being comfortable to participate, ability to engage and developing an enriching experience.

During the same study, the students and the educators are given the chance to compare two different classroom setups – the traditional one and the flexible one. Based on the result, classrooms that encourage active learning have a major impact on the engagement of the students.

One-armed chairs used to be the common furniture inside classrooms but things are changing with the introduction of flexible tables, comfortable chairs and more spaces for them to work on. Schools are starting to move towards this direction because the tables can be moved easily to adapt with the kind of activities the students have for the day. Flexible classroom furniture makes it possible for learners to experience collaborations.

Students should also have chairs that can swivel so they have the chance to move around and make themselves comfortable which also retains their attention longer. To complete the smart classroom setup, there should be erasable markers available for everyone and whiteboards where they can doodle on for ideas. The walls should also be painted that will encourage student engagement and there should be enough window to motivate them.

Teachers know that when the students are placed in an environment where they can expose themselves to the entire room without fear of failing. Students who are given the right tools will be able to improve their problem solving skills in order to achieve success. They will be able to gather strength from one another and improve themselves which is a skill necessary for students to excel in the 21st century. The bottom line is that educational institutions should buy school furniture that will help students become better learners.
